Delivered through a traineeship pathway under the Queensland Government’s Career Boost Program, this qualification provides the knowledge and practical skills required to operate trains safely and efficiently across the rail freight network.

TLI42622 Certificate IV in Train Driving- Traineeship Qualification Structure

The TLI42622 Certificate IV in Train Driving consists of 21 units of competency, structured as follows:

1. TLIB0018 Identify and rectify minor faults on rail traffic (30 nominal hours)
2. TLIB3075 Inspect and prepare a motive power unit (40 nominal hours)
3. TLIB3118 Apply awareness of railway fundamentals (10 nominal hours)
4. TLIC0016 Identify and respond to signals and trackside signs (25 nominal hours)
5. TLIC0020 Operate and monitor a motive power unit (100 nominal hours)
6. TLIC0024 Operate rail traffic with due consideration of route conditions (200 nominal hours)
7. TLIF0004 Work effectively in a train-driving environment (25 nominal hours)
8. TLIF0008 Apply safety critical communications in the rail environment (25 nominal hours)
9. TLIF0025 Follow work health and safety procedures (20 nominal hours)

Note:

Certain units within the TLI42622 Certificate IV in Train Driving require learners to complete driving hours under instruction as part of the qualification.
Railtrain specifies 540 hours of driving under instruction, as outlined in the Training and Assessment Strategy (TAS).
However, as this qualification is delivered through a traineeship, your employer may determine that additional or fewer hours are required based on your individual competence and operational experience.
Non-accredited employer industry requirements apply and are not included in the above information– Safework, route assessment.

Upon successful completion a Testamur and Record of Results will be issued for the qualification as follows: TLI42622 Certificate IV in Train Driving (Freight)

The following outline provides a general overview of the training program structure for the 21 units of competency. Training and assessment are delivered through a blend of face-to-face classroom sessions and on-the-job practical learning, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge in real rail operations throughout their traineeship.

Eligibility Criteria and Enrolment Information

Must be aged 15 years or older and no longer at school.
Must permanently reside in Queensland.
Must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or hold an Australian permanent residency or temporary visa with working rights.

To be eligible to receive government subsidised training, the apprentice or trainee must:

have entered into a training contract for the qualification that is funded by the department, and be registered on the department’s systems
if from overseas, have a visa allowing them to work in Australia
not have already completed 2 apprenticeship/traineeship qualifications within the last 10 years. This includes school-based apprenticeships or traineeships.

Enrolment

All learners must complete formal enrolment requirements prior to the commencement of Nationally Recognised Training and Assessment.

These include:

Completion of a Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Assessment for the specified qualification or training program ACSF levels. The purpose of this assessment is to ensure each learner possesses the core skills required to engage with the training content and assessments and identify if additional support is required.
Queensland career boost traineeship eligibility checklist
Enrolment application which requests responses to data collection requirements to finalise enrolment and a series of Pre-Training Review (PTR) questions, designed to assess the learners’ existing skills, experience and learning needs.

A member of the RTO coordination team will liaise with the learner to ensure all requirements are met prior to finalising the commencement of Training and Assessment formally under the traineeship.

Co-Contribution Fees

The co-contribution fee represents the total cost to the student, including all enrolment, tuition, service, material, and assessment-related costs.

For apprenticeship and traineeship pathways, the co-contribution fee is set by the Department at $1.60 per nominal hour per unit, unless the apprentice or trainee qualifies for a partial or full fee exemption which is calculated at 40 % of the Co-contribution fee where they fall into one of the following categories:

Was or will be under 17 years of age at the end of February in the year in which the SAS provides training, and is not at school and has not completed year 12;

Holds a Health Care, Veteran or Pensioner Concession Card issued under Commonwealth law, or is the partner or a dependant of a person who holds such a card and is named on the card;

Holds an official form issued under Commonwealth law confirming that the individual, their partner or the person of whom they are a dependant, is entitled to concessions under a Health Care, Veteran or Pensioner Concession Card;

Identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Refund Policy

Fees will only be charged where a training has commenced for an associated unit of competency, as such, in this instance no refund will be applicable.
