Rio Tinto Safeworking Training

Rail safeworking courses are designed to give you an understanding of the operating rules, procedures and technology applicable for your role whilst working inside the rail corridor on the Rio Tinto rail network.

RTIO SW Supervised Worker

Participants will be introduced to the Railway Operating Rules (ROR) and develop an understanding of a rail safety worker’s obligations when working inside the Danger Zone, under the supervision and instruction of a Protection Officer. Participants will understand their role on the railway network, demonstrate correct use of radios, language, and protocols, including emergency communications, safest options when stopping rail vehicles in case of emergencies, how and when to provide appropriate hand signals to rail vehicles, and reporting of any conditions that may affect the rail network.

RTIO SW Lookout

This training outlines the role and responsibilities of a Lookout. Participants will witness demonstrations on how to keep watch for rail vehicle movements, how and when to warn personnel of rail vehicles approaching a worksite and the actions required by the Lookout if conditions change. The Lookout is directed by the Protection Officer (PO); who determines the number & positioning of lookout(s), methods of communication, the locations of safe place(s), recognising unsafe situations and the implementation of suitable controls.
