Course prerequisites

Successful completion of Railtrain’s Track Work I training program or Statements of Attainment for the 7 units in that program.

Course Information

This skill set gives you additional skills to qualify as a Track Worker in the rail industry. The units included are:

TLIB2001 Check and assess operational capabilities of equipment
TLIB2092 Operate minor mechanical equipment
TLIS2030 Carry out track ballasting
TLIS2031 Install railway sleepers
TLIS2034 Install and repair rail fastening systems
TLIS2044 Carry out rail installation

A nationally recognised Statement of Attainment is given to all successful participants, who will have achieved a further 6 of the 16 units of competency required for the TLI27121 Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure.

Delivery

Learning starts online, consolidated with a face-to-face workshop.

Part 1: online learning

Some of the units are delivered to you firstly as online training modules, including theory and an assessment for each. You can start each module when you are ready and progress through them at your own pace*.

*There is a 3 month time limit on completing the online modules and assessments in this program. This is to ensure learning is retained before the workshop is held.

Part 2: classroom and workshop learning

Once you have worked through the online modules and successfully completed the assessments, the next step is to attend a 5 day workshop at Railtrain. The workshop will cover practical training to cement the online learning and include theory and practical assessments. These workshops will be scheduled to meet participant demand.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If you have relevant work experience and training and can provide evidence of this, you may be eligible for RPL. Call or email our office for advice.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN)

As part of the enrolment process you will be assessed to make sure you have the LLN skills required to work in the rail industry.

The cost for the 6 units, including online learning and workshop theory and practical training, is $900 (GST Free), to be paid as part of enrolment.

Frequently Asked Questions - Track Work II

Do I have to have completed the Track Work I course to enrol in Track Work II?
A: Yes, unless you have Statements of Attainment for the 7 units in that program.
Do I have to complete all the online modules?
A: Yes. All online modules must be completed before you can enrol for the 5-day workshop to complete the learning for the remaining units.

Do I have to pay the $900 up front when I enrol?
A: Yes.

Is there a time limit for completing the online modules?
A: Yes, they must be completed within 3 months. If you do not complete them within that timeframe but still want to continue the training, you will need to re-enrol and pay the course fee again. Please contact the Student Support team if you are having any difficulties.

Can I do the online modules in my own time, or are there scheduled class times?
A: The online modules can be done at any time that suits you. They are completed by you individually.

If I have to withdraw from the program, do I get a refund?
A: No. The program is designed with flexibility in mind – you have up to 3 months to complete the online modules, and you are offered a number of dates for the 5 day workshop once you have completed the online modules. This should allow you to manage any interruptions and to continue your learning.

If I have completed all the online modules, how do I enrol for the 5 day workshop?
A: The Student Support team will confirm when you are able to enrol into the workshop. You can enrol online at the Railtrain website. The scheduled workshops and dates will be there to view and choose. Once you enrol you will receive a confirmation email with information for the workshop.

If I have completed all the online modules, is there a time limit for completing the 5 day workshop?
A: Yes, you need to complete the 5 day workshop within 3 months of finishing the online modules.
Can I complete the online modules using my smart phone?
A: No. There may be problems with screen content presentation. A laptop or PC is required.

Do I have to attend all 5 days of the 5 day workshop?
A: Yes, if you wish to complete the learning and assessments for the 6 units and to receive a Statement of Attainment.

English is a second language for me. How do I know if I will fully understand the training materials?
A: Before being given access to the materials, you will be required to complete an online Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment. The RTO will assess whether you will require any further support for you to successfully complete the learning.

Where will the workshop be held?
A: At the Railtrain training rooms and track work training pad, located at:
Unit 1, 58 Tarlton Crescent, Perth Airport.
I don’t live in Perth. Can I still enrol in this program?
A: You can, but to complete the program you will need to be able to attend in person the 5 day workshop on one of its scheduled start dates.

If learners can enrol at any time and complete the online modules any time within 3 months, when will the workshops be held?
A: There will be a rolling schedule of workshops, and they will be run to meet learner demand.

Your information mentions that some learners may be eligible for up to 50% discount on the price for the training. How can I find out if I am eligible?
A: If you are over 40 years old, you may be eligible for Skills Checkpoint Funding. Complete this form to register with Busy At Work https://skillscheck.com.au/registration/Participant/ and see if you are eligible.

Will I be guaranteed a job at the end of the training?
A: There are no guarantees of employment. Successful participants will get a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and a solid grounding in the basic skills needed for track working in the rail sector.

What type of assessments are there as part of the training?
A: There are theory assessments to test your knowledge of the content, and practical assessments to test that you are competent in the physical skills required in each unit.

If I complete this training, do I have to do the Track Work III course?
A: No, but successful completion of the Track Work III course will give you a nationally recognised Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure (TLI27121).

Do I have to finish this course to enrol in the Track Work III course?
A: Yes, you must successfully complete Track Work II before you can enrol in the Track Work III course.

If I’m enrolled in the workshop, can I move to another date if I am unable to attend?
A: Yes, but we ask for at least 2 working days’ notice in writing to training@railtrain.com.au ; Otherwise a reschedule fee of $75 may will be applied.
What do I need to wear for the workshops?
A: Long pants, long sleeved shirts (not too loose fitting) , and ankle height safety boots. If you have Hi-Vis shirts, you are welcome to wear them.
Are there any pre-requisites for the training, such as medicals or inductions?
A: There are no pre-requisites, however you need a basic level of physical fitness. The workshop will involve lifting and other forms of manual handling, as well as the use of typical hand tools found in the rail sector.

How long is the qualification valid?
A: For life. However, employer expectations of suitable qualifications may change in the future.

Do you accept Amex?
A: No.

Can I pay any way other than debit/credit card?
A: No.
I have achieved some of these units already, but I would like to go through training for the other units and get more Statements of Attainment. Is this possible, and can I get a reduced course fee?
A: Talk to Railtrain. It may be possible.
What happens if I attend the workshop but do not get assessed as competent during the practical assessments?
A: As much support as possible will be given during the workshops and the assessments. However, if a participant is assessed as Not Yet Competent for all or some of the units, they will not get a Statement of Attainment for those units. All participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for the units in which they are assessed as Competent. Refer also to Railtrain’s Complaints and Appeals Policy on the website.

When will I receive my Statement of Attainment for the units I have successfully completed?
A: An electronic copy will be emailed to you within 10 days of completion, and a hard copy is put in the mail at the same time.
What type of learner support is available for the online modules?
A: Contact Railtrain for support with problems with the online modules or if you have any questions about the content. The theory in the units will be reviewed during the workshop.

Career Opportunities/Further Study

Successful participants can use this training to apply for jobs in the rail industry if they are not currently employed in rail. They can also enrol in the following further training program with Railtrain:

Track Work III

Participants who successfully achieve the units of competency in all three Track Work programs will be awarded the nationally recognised Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure.

TRACK WORK III

Completing introductory training in track and rail infrastructure

The units included are:

TLIB1093 Clean equipment and restore worksite
TLIU2008 Apply environmental procedures to rail infrastructure
TLIF0008 Apply safety critical communications in the rail environment

Course prerequisites
Successful completion of Railtrain’s Track Work I and Track Work II training programs, or Statements of Attainment for the 13 units in those programs.

Those who have successfully achieved 16 units in Track Work 1-3 will also receive the TLI27121 Certificate II in Rail Infrastructure.
